The entire country gathers to celebrate Lord Krishna with great excitement and fervor. It is not uncommon to see children dressed as miniature Krishna markets lined with sweet shops and exquisite handicrafts, people in preparation for the performances (also called Ras Leela) as well as temples adorned with flowers. This day is when recitations of the verses from holy texts, Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita, are also performed in Hindu shrines. People greet each other by chanting "Happy Krishna Janmashtami" and exchange sweets and wishes.
