Forming the gesture of charity with his right hand, and supporting a full-blooming lotus in the left, standing in the thrice-bent posture is the classic image of Avalokiteshvara. The lotus in his hand earns him the epithet ‘Padmapani’, padma = lotus; pani = hand. The sturdy figure of Avalokiteshvara nevertheless has an almost feminine charm on his face. He is an embodiment of grace and compassion, as expressed in his pensive expression.
