What are Dental Implants?
Natural teeth have long tooth roots extending into the jawbone and anchoring the tooth firmly. When you lose a tooth, your dentist must remove the entire tooth, including its root. A dental implant is designed to replace a complete tooth, including the root. It has a small screw or post made from medical-grade zirconia or titanium alloy. The post is surgically implanted into the jawbone, a procedure that is reasonably quick, minimally invasive and well-tolerated; for example, a single dental implant can be inserted in around half an hour to an hour.

Dental implants are unique in replacing the tooth root, and once the post is in the jawbone, new bone cells start to grow on and around the post. The implant post is often specially coated or treated to encourage this process, called osseointegration. It takes between three and six months for osseointegration to finish. At this point, the implant is firmly fused in the jaw and easily strong enough to support a replacement tooth restoration and a second component called an abutment is attached to the implant post. It protrudes above the gumline and supports the implant restoration, the third and final component.

Dental implants can support implant crowns and bridges or hold dentures securely in the mouth. We can restore single, multiple, or complete arches of teeth with dental implants with implant-supported dentures. Implant crowns and bridges are non-removable and are screwed or cemented onto the abutments. Implant dentures are removable and clip onto special attachments on the implants.

Dental implants offer several advantages over other tooth replacement options, such as bridges and dentures. They are more stable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Dental implants are also more durable and can last a lifetime with proper care.

There are many implant systems available to suit all tooth loss situations. Options include:

Conventional-sized implants used for most treatments
Mini dental implants that are narrower in diameter and used in specific circumstances
