An automatic bomb calorimeter is a specialized instrument used in chemistry and analytical laboratories to measure the heat of combustion of a substance. This type of calorimeter operates by burning a sample of material inside a sealed chamber (the bomb) in the presence of excess oxygen. The heat released from the combustion reaction is absorbed by a surrounding water bath, and the temperature change of the water is measured. From this temperature change, the heat released by the combustion can be calculated.
