The MGPS is installed to provide a safe, convenient and cost – effective system for the provision of medical gases to the clinical and nursing staff at the point of use. It reduces the problems associated with the use of gas cylinders such as safety, porter age, storage and noise.

HTM Guidelines are followed for all new installations. It is not necessary to apply the guidance retrospectively unless patient or staff safety is compromised. The existing installations should be assessed for compliance in accordance with HMT. A plan for upgrading the existing system should be prepared, with consideration of priority for patient safety. It is essential for Managers to liaise with medical colleges and take note of other guidelines published by the Department of Health to assess the system for technical shortcomings.
