Sugilite jewelry is an elegant-looking rare gemstone. It was named after the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, who discovered it in 1944. It is considered to be both – a mineral and a gemstone. Because of its popular rich and lustrous shade of pink to purple, it is known as “grape jelly.” It is a sodium lithium silicate mineral. Although the traces of manganese give it its purple color, manganese can also be substituted by iron and aluminum, resulting in a slight variation in the properties and color of sugilite.
