When fine jewelry uses natural gemstones in its design but isn't entirely made of precious metals and stones, the phrase "semi-fine jewelry" was created. Semi-fine jewelry is of a significantly higher standard than most fashion jewelry, therefore it deserves its own classification even though some may describe it as fine jewelry and others as fashion jewelry.
