The New York heating law ensures residential buildings remain livable during the cold season. According to NYC Housing Maintenance Code, from October 1 through May 31 known as “heat season” landlords must maintain indoor temperatures of at least 68°F when the outside temperature falls below 55°F during the day. At night, regardless of outside temperature, the indoor temperature must be at least 62°F. Violations of the New York heating law can result in fines and penalties. More importantly, tenants may be living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions. If your landlord fails to comply, you have the right to file a complaint with 311 or seek legal support.
