Carpet acts as a filter. Not the type that can easily be replaced; the type that continues to collect everything.
Dust. Pollen. Human skin cells. Pollution from the outdoors that has travelled on pavement and streets. Busy office settings -- particularly large open plan areas -- these factors combine to create a perfect storm against the carpet. With each step, dust, pollen, etc. are pushed deeper into the carpet.
