Black gums can have several causes, including natural pigmentation, smoking, certain medications, amalgam tattoos, medical conditions, gum disease, and, rarely, oral melanoma. While some pigmentation is harmless, any new, changing, irregular, painful, or bleeding dark patch should be examined by a dentist for proper evaluation.
