Law vs Ethics
The tension between law and ethics is inevitable but crucial for a fair and functioning society. Laws are a formal, enforced structure of rules which govern behavior and uphold certain measures of order, typically with distinct consequences for breaking the law. Ethics, however, are more than just compliance: they are values that lead to acting in integrity when the law doesn’t tell you much of anything. The law must be followed, but ethics is a deeper standard of fairness, responsibility, and respect that is often voluntary. Recognizing that there is a difference in law and ethics allows individuals and businesses to make choices that both society and oneself are proud of.
